They raised loan growth guidance and built reserves against a worse unemployment outlook in the same quarter.
Thesis: NIM at 11.34% with 700bps of operating leverage and record insured deposits is real margin expansion funded by a franchise getting cheaper while assets reprice. But receivable growth of 22% against 9% sales and falling payment rates means the balance sheet is growing because customers pay slower, and charge-offs are running up 59bps per quarter toward the top of guidance. The stock works only if credit normalizes gently; the April sales print of 2.5% says the growth engine is stalling as losses season.
Verdict: HOLD — Conviction: MEDIUM
Catalyst: Q2 charge-off and payment rate print. If NCO tracks above 3.0% for card while sales stay near 2.5%, the loan growth raise gets reversed and estimates come down.
Key Risk: Payment rates falling another 80bps with sales near zero would push receivable growth into pure credit extension, forcing a guidance cut on both loan growth and expenses.
The Tell: CFO unprompted on charge-off guidance: 'our internal roll rate models basically can take a very, very good look at six months forward, and then we moved to more advanced models for anything beyond that... great line of sight through September. And then beyond September, we've relied on our analytical models.' The tightened guidance covers three quarters; the rest is model output.
Friction Level: MODERATE_FRICTION — Both sides agree on the numbers: charge-offs rising, sales decelerating, deposits at records. Disagreement is whether record deposits plus NIM expansion outweigh a credit cycle turn that is still inside guidance.
